As parents, ensuring our children’s safety around water is a top priority. For Naomi, a 43-year-old parent from Belconnen, enrolling her son in swimming lessons at Kingswim Macgregor turned out to be life-saving.
Twice, her son found himself in dangerous situations, and the skills he learned at Kingswim enabled the supervising adult to save him.
When Jonas was five, a sudden wave swept him off his feet while swimming at the beach. Although he was only a few meters away from his parents, he struggled in the water. Naomi recalls, “He yelled ‘Help, help’ and put his arm up in the air with a fist, just like they get taught at Kingswim.” This quick response allowed his dad to jump in and rescue him immediately.
Later that year, during the Easter holidays, the family was at a lake with a steep drop-off near the shore. Despite Naomi’s warnings, her son ventured too close to the edge and slipped into deeper water. Naomi vividly remembers, “He dropped down under the water, but his head popped up, and he called for help. I yelled out, ‘Paddle, paddle, kick, kick,’ which is what they say in their swimming lessons. He did the right thing, kept his head above water, and I was able to jump in and pull him back to safety.”
These experiences highlight the importance of vigilant supervision and swimming lessons and the survival techniques taught at Kingswim.
“The language and skills they teach, like putting your hand up and calling out for help, were instinctive for him,” Naomi explains. “It’s reassuring to know that these lessons make a difference.”
