Our Competent program is designed for intermediate swimmers who are ready to refine their skills.
If your child already has the basics covered, our Competent program is the perfect next step! The program brings to life all the skills learned in the previous Foundation and Independent swim programs and introduces skills to be built on in the Graduate program.
Lessons focus on building endurance, refining stroke technique and transitioning from shallow to deep water. Children will strengthen their water safety skills, helping them move through the water with confidence. We also introduce breaststroke, a valuable skill for both survival and recreational swimming.
Some elements of the Competent program may take more time to master, but with practise, children will continue to grow as strong, capable swimmers ready to navigate a variety of situations in and around the water.
Competent swimming lesson levels
At Kingswim, we divide our learn to swim programs into stages called K-levels. These K-levels ensure children continually develop their skills and confidence as they progress through the program. Our Competent program is divided into levels K5, K6, K7 and K8.

How we teach
We want every child to become the best swimmer they can be.
Our teaching style focuses on ensuring children feel safe and supported in the water. All of our teachers follow the same lesson plan to ensure consistency.
We also teach in small class sizes, creating a nurturing environment where every child receives the close attention and guidance they need to develop their skills.
To support your child during lessons, our teachers may use ‘hands-on corrections’. This is where they use their hands to guide your child into the correct swimming position and keep them safe.
Our aim is to help your child grow more confident and capable in the water, one lesson at a time.
Survival swimming skills
We incorporate survival swimming skills into every lesson at Kingswim – from our Foundation programs right up to our Graduate and Squad programs.
Each week, your child has the opportunity to learn and practise essential swimming skills that will help them become stronger and safer in the water.
We also have dedicated survival weeks, where children learn specific lifesaving skills appropriate to their age and ability level. This includes safe entries and exits, rescue techniques, survival strokes and more.
By focusing on survival swimming skills, our lessons help kids grow into confident swimmers who know how to be safer in and around water.

Common questions
-
Do you have any school holiday programs?
We sure do! Our Fast Track holiday program is an intensive program held in the school holidays, usually for four days. It’s a fun way to get active during the holidays and learn water safety skills while getting some extra practise in the pool. The intensive nature of the program helps children focus on their technique to progress to the next level. It's also a great way to experience the Kingswim program for the first time.
-
How often will I get feedback on my child's swimming progress?
Our supervisors regularly assess swimming classes and provide feedback to parents following assessments.
Changing swimming levels is not limited to term breaks, so your child can progress to the next swimming level whenever they are ready.
You can also follow your child's progress in the Kingswim customer app.
-
Is your program accredited?
Yes, our learn to swim program is a Swim Australia registered program and all of our teachers hold nationally recognised qualifications.
